May is National Foster Care Month and the recognition presents an opportunity for us to bring awareness to the importance of supporting children and families who come to the attention of the children welfare system.
At any given time, there are nearly 11,000 children in foster care in North Carolina and approximately 4,500 in South Carolina; the states central to The Duke Endowment’s grantmaking. For the Child and Family Well-being program area, a portion of our work focuses on ensuring the well-being needs of children and young adults in foster care are met.
Our grantmaking seeks to improve the outcomes for this population of children through three primary strategies –funding active implementation support for evidence-based/evidence-informed practices, developing and testing new approaches and advocating for improvements. This link from Children’s Bureau, Administration for Children and Families provides a wealth of resources to promote best practices toward that end.
