Increasing Access and Affordability — Scholarships and Financial Aid
When he established his Endowment in 1924, Mr. Duke referred to education as “next to religion, the greatest civilizing influence.” As such, he specified that the greatest portion of the funds be awarded to four schools — Davidson College, Duke University, Johnson C. Smith University and Furman University — to help the institutions increase access to educational opportunities and become more affordable.
Advancing the Thriving Rural Communities Initiative
We believe that rural churches are anchor institutions that can serve as a catalyst for human, community and economic advancement in the communities they serve. Developing leaders for the complex and dynamic ministry challenges in North Carolina’s rural communities is a primary focus of our grantmaking investments.
AccessHealth — Networks of Care for the Low-Income, Uninsured
The AccessHealth initiative launched in 2008 to reduce health disparities, improve clinical outcomes, decrease avoidable hospital use and expand access to care among low-income, uninsured adults.
Expanding Access to Care for Vulnerable Populations
Across the Carolinas, too many vulnerable residents lack insurance or go underserved. The Health Care program area seeks to reduce health disparities, improve clinical outcomes and reduce inappropriate hospital utilization by increasing access to essential services for low-income uninsured adults and underserved populations.
Supporting Maternal & Infant Health
The Health Care program area seeks to improve maternal and infant health outcomes and reduce health disparities.
Evidence-Based Interventions for Children
The Duke Endowment has committed $16 million since 2008 to help expand the use of proven, evidence-based interventions in North Carolina and South Carolina. This initiative is ongoing, but unsolicited requests for grants are not accepted.
Researching & Strengthening Student Resilience on College Campuses
To derive full value from their college experiences, students must be equipped to handle the pressure and stress of college life. To help ensure that students can thrive, the Endowment has awarded $3.4 million in grants to support research and interventions through the Student Resilience and Well-Being Project on the four Endowment-supported campuses in North Carolina and South Carolina. The project aimed to understand and reinforce the conditions that strengthen college student resilience and well-being.
Supporting Oral Health in Schools
The Duke Endowment’s oral health initiative seeks to support system reform and policy change; to promote prevention by expanding school-based oral health services; and to support oral health integration.
Ready for School, Ready for Life
The Duke Endowment is supporting a comprehensive 10-year strategy to improve and equalize opportunity in Guilford County, N.C., by making large, targeted investments in young children and their caregivers.
Improving Community Health through Healthy People, Healthy Carolinas
The Duke Endowment launched its Healthy People, Healthy Carolinas Initiative in 2015 to help communities in North Carolina and South Carolina address chronic health issues such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease.
Summer Literacy Initiative
The Duke Endowment works with rural congregations to combat “the summer slide,” or learning loss, in their communities through evidence-informed literacy programs.
